Norton, also known as Cynthiana, is a hybrid grape variety that is considered America’s oldest native grape. It was first cultivated in Richmond, Virginia, by Dr. Daniel Norborne Norton in the early 19th century. Norton is a cross between Vitis aestivalis and Vitis vinifera. Norton is valued for its hardiness and resistance to various diseases and pests, including phylloxera. This makes it a versatile and reliable grape for winemakers in diverse climates. Norton wines are known for their ability to age well, with some varieties capable of aging for over two decades. They pair well with grilled meats, lamb, venison, smoked pork, pasta with red sauce, blue cheese, aged sharp cheddar, and dark chocolate desserts.
